Diabetes and Bullies

I thought I would repost my story since Bernard and George both wrote about Diabetes abd Bullying , I thought id re post my story about D and being bullied that I had to write for a college writing class

If you have known me before this class you would see a different side of me before then now. I have been target of useless hurtful name calling and physical abuse. I don't know why it started but I had to deal with it for a while. The worst years of the bullying was in Middle School (Grades 6-8). But most of the verbal / physical abuse came when I was in 7th grade. The year started out all right although select few boys thought they would be fun to start calling me names like long neck, giraffe, and ugly boy. Then in middle of the year I found out that I had juvenile or type 1 diabetes and that just made matters worse. After 2 weeks being absent from school, I came back to more name-calling but now they were calling me AIDS Girl.

After I came back I had to go to the nurse and take my insulin injection and glucose reading and they would say better go get your " AIDS Medicine and Needle's" before you die. Also they started to attack me in the halls, push me into lockers and try to push me down the flights of stairs. It impacted me a great deal that after getting everything poured on me at once I started to get more and more depressed. I always was crying and telling my parents that I was never going back to that school.

The principal and some teachers thought I was the one to start everything but they never thought to look at the ones really doing the damage.

So I guess im not good at blogs, and I never generate any feeback.

I finnaly went to see my cde not that I wanted to .I had to for work all because one day I was 380 and I blew up at the manager. I got the full picture that I havent been on the right track. I tested maybe the minuim of 4 times and I never logged and just bolused if i remembered too, so that has changed. I been testing maybe 7 times and using the ultralink to bolus right then and there and logging more. I been happy with the results although i have had lows down in the 40's and Highs up to 271 . I more happy I am not seeing any 300's or higher like I have. I mentioned I felt like a failure and my cde said your normal, for someone living with diabetes ittakes alot to handle. Also Not to mention I actually FEEL BETTER. Lets hope i stay on the right track for a long while.

Getting blood work thats a new thing i have to start doing .guess I havent had that done since 2006, oops

So where to begin. First of all I cant believe it has 14 years since I got Diabetes. It was one thing that wasnt on my mind back then and then bam it has came full throttle. I somewhat knew about Diabetes since my Dad has it , but I wasnt thinking I would get it. I remember when day that I happened to cut my finger and I asked my Dad to check my blood sugar and he did, I think the number was in the 300’s but we brushed it off because I was outside and my hands were dirty.

Then I get into 7th Grade. The year that we were old enough we could try out for a sport if we wanted to. I jumped on that bandwagon because I wanted to be that cool kid that got out of school early. The next thing I know I am in the nurses office for a physical for track. everything was going good till the main doctor checked my urine for glucocse and it came back 4+ meaning I was in the 400 range. He came out to me and started asking me all these questions and called my parents. Of course I thought id done something wrong and they were all upset.

Fast Track a few days later I was sitting in Home Ec and I saw my mom walk up to the door and say something to the teacher and the teacher came up to me and said My mom had to talk to me and I was going to be all right. I somewhat forgot the whole diabetes thing for a few days but it hit me I had something wrong with me.

The next few hours were a blur. I didnt want to go to the hospital but I had to and when I got there I hated it . The next few days were some of the best minus the finger pokes and shots. I got all the free diet ginger ale I wanted and I could watch any movies I wanted to and I got to hang out in the rec room and got visitors all the time , but I also had to learn about Diabetes.

Even though i wanted to just relax I knew and Was told I had to learn all this stuff so I could do it the rest of my life. I found out id have to be on injections and order to leave the hospital I had to give myself one. I was lucky enough to have my Dad to practice on ( you cant get any better then that , could you?) I did get to leave a few days later. I remember it was a Sunday and I gave myself my first shot and many more to come

As I look back on those few days I knew this happened because A Higher Power knew I could handle the added pressures of being a diabetic. Although there are times I feel like I have failed. get depressed enough that just give up for a few hours/days , and Just get angry at the whole thing , I just remember it can be worse much worse

Ok. I thought I had some good co workers but now they are hounding me on the things I eat on break. I been trying hard to eat something healthy like granola cereal and fruit or bagels, but I like to eat a cookie once in awhile and When I do they yell. Escpecially this one guy who is in his 60's and has type 2 and on Pills. He just chewed me out because he saw me eating cookes even after I had a roast beef sandwhich and he went on and on bout how he was higher then normal this morning and he was mad because he didnt do anything to be high

I know I should speak up but I feel if I do they will get madder. What do you Suggest or Do??

1. What made you being and continue to blog?

I started to blog when I first saw they had an online journels. First it was to keep me updated on my friends that I worked at Camp with then it was to channel my anger and now just to see how others are dealing and living with the challenges thast diabetes bring you and I every day

2. If you could come back to earth as an animal, which one would it be and why?

That is easy. A Monkey. Because I always wanted one and they are cool. I can swing around in trees and be like my human self. I am always Monkeying around , HAHAHAHA

3. What is your favorite cartoon character? I have many favorites so here they go.

I think i jinxed myself saying my sugars been good the past few days when i last posted bout being sick, I missed work sunday monday and only worked 2 hours today because my sugar was in the HI range. I swear i took like 28 units of humalog today by syringe not at the same time , and I dont think its my pump cause I just put a new set in and changed to a new bottle of insulin too , so here it goes again , its time to make laura ticked

12 years of Diabetes in 80 Odd Seconds

12 years gone so fast now i know why i cant remember the day i swas dx'd Am I the only one. Only thing I remember is these few things

I was in the 7th Grade
I wanted to go out for track and field
I didnt have any symptoms of Diabetes
I really didnt know what D was even though my Dad has it ( type 2)
I had to get a physical for track
they had us participants give a urine smple
thats how they figured out I had D
Sugar was 400+
Had a blood test the next day
Went back to School After
I was sitting in foods class
While evry other kid was drinking kool aide ( even the diabetic kid that was sitting by me)
my mom came by and talked to the teacher ( mom worked in the cafeteria then)
mom told the teacher that i had to go to the hospital
I left
mom went to the principal and told them
I on the other hand called my grandparents to tell them I had to go to the Hospital
They were not home
got home and packed my suitcase and my mom told me I had Diabetes
Dad came home and I cried
I didnt want to go
We went to the hospital
I didnt like it at first
Then I did
Free Pop and Playing All day
learned about D and gave my Dad his shot
Stayed there for a week
8 yrs after I started on the insulin Pump
11 years after I was Hospitalized in ICU for 3 days and 2 days in a regular room for DKA ( in October 2006
Now its 12 years . ( Remember I dont remember the exact day I was dx'd

Something New I Like

There is something new that I am getting to enjoy more then Diet Pepsi. Its the Minute Maid Light Juices. I escpecially like Raspberry Passion. I drank the who half gallon 5 minutes after I bought it, They have others but my store where I work only sales the Raspberry Passion and Lemonade and the Light OJ ( which I am afraid to try because of the thought of my sugar going even though it has 13 grams of sugar and or Carbs . I cant Remember).

All because I got denied AGAIN for health insurance even though i have bills comming out of the wazoo and bills consisting of over 5,000 dollars, from when I was in the Hospital because of DKA. How can one deny a person who has a chronic illness and needs medication and has bills like I do. They say its all because I make TOO MUCH FREAKIN MONEY. Thats to me is Bullshit. I rebounded from all the physical/verbal assults in these years, to get on with my life . I am currently a Junior majoring in Early Childhood Education.( When I decideto go back to college) Also working at a local grocery store

yup it happened I was hospitalized with DKA. Sugar was 890 when I went in and it was caused by the flu ( they think). 3 days in ICU and 1 day in a regular room... numerous IV's other then that a tad bit weak

Anyways I dont make enough to get insurance and the government says I work to many freakin hours and make to much freakin money and many wont accept you because you have diabetes. My Job doesnt offer benifits until you work 18 months and I am not even hit a year there yet but im getting there.
Somehow im surviving but not that much. I am lucky enough to get my pump sipplies from my nice cde at the local hospital and i use my dads humalog since he gets like 10 vials of humalog for 3 months and strips ( I hardly test) I admit that . But some people like me arent not so lucky to have others to depend on and it makes me wonder why does your government haver to be this bad

Walk to Cure Diabetes

I'm writing to you to ask for your support in a very special cause.

This year, I'll be taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes along with a half-million other walkers across the country. Our goal: To raise $86 million to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.
Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating, often deadly disease that affects millions of people--a large and growing percentage of them children.

Many people think type 1 diabetes can be controlled by insulin. While insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type 1 diabetes, there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease.
That's the bad news... and yes, it's pretty bad.

The good news, though, is that a cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. And JDRF funds a major portion of all type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity.

I'm writing to ask for your support because now more than ever, EACH of us can be a part of bringing about a cure. Each of us can make a real difference
